TikTok Ban: Strategy Lessons For Writers

The TikTok ban has left many writers questioning how to adapt their strategies. In this post, we’ll explore how writers can learn from this shift to strengthen their platforms and stay connected with readers.

The potential TikTok ban has created waves in the writing community, leaving many authors concerned about the future of their creative expression and audience connections. TikTok has been an invaluable tool for writers to share their work, build their brand, and engage with readers in meaningful ways, it has provided avenues of income through recognition, book sales through TikTok Shop, brand awareness through BookTokers, and even agent/publishing deals.

The Facts

BookTok helped sell approximately 20 million books. Notably, indie authors have leveraged TikTok to achieve remarkable sales figures. Additionally, the BookTok community has been instrumental in bringing attention to self-published authors, leading to increased sales and, in some cases, traditional publishing deals.

While the TikTok ban on January 19th lasted less than twenty-four hours, the temporary extension Trump has promised is not a permanent solution. The president elect has promised a 90-day timeframe for Bytedance to renegotiate, stating that he wanted the “United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture” (Later, What the TikTok Ban Means for Brands & Creators (And What to Do About It).

In a nutshell, authors, it means that we’re not out of the woods yet. The future of TikTok is still hanging in the balance and a potential ban is still possible. While this is understandably upsetting, it’s also an opportunity to explore new avenues and strengthen our community. Here’s how writers can tackle this change head-on.

Recognize the Emotional Impact

Let’s start by acknowledging the emotional impact this situation has on writers. For many, TikTok is more than just a platform—it’s a space to grow, thrive, and connect. For authors, it’s a space to grow readership, make book sales, and find traditional publishing opportunities. Feeling upset or uncertain is valid. Any potential loss of income or connection for a creative person can feel devastating when you have to work so hard to build it in the first place.

However, the writing community is known for its resilience and creativity. This moment, though challenging, is also a chance to innovate and discover new ways to share our stories that don’t rely on just one avenue or social media platform.

Consider Alternative Platforms

TikTok’s absence, though short, proved to be a daunting event, but let’s not forget that there are other platforms where writers can continue to connect with readers and share their work. Here are a few options worth exploring:

  1. Instagram Reels
    • Instagram offers a similar short-form video format with Reels, making it an excellent alternative for TikTok creators.
    • Use Reels to share writing tips, behind-the-scenes peeks, or book recommendations in an engaging and visual format.
  2. YouTube Shorts
    • YouTube’s short-form video feature is ideal for storytelling snippets, quick tutorials, or creative book promotions.
  3. Threads by Instagram
    • Threads is a text-based platform perfect for sparking conversations about writing, books, and industry trends.
  4. Pinterest Idea Pins
    • Highlight your writing process, share book aesthetics, or post promotional content to a highly engaged audience.

Focus on Building Your Own Platforms

One of the biggest takeaways from this situation is the importance of owning your connection with your readers. Social media platforms may come and go, but your own platform is here to stay. It’s the safest, most stable way to protect your author revenue

  • Start a Newsletter: Building an email list gives you direct access to your audience, allowing you to share updates, promotions, and exclusive content.
  • Create a Blog or Website: Use your site as a hub for all your writing-related activities, from sharing posts to hosting resources for readers and writers alike.

Investing in your own spaces ensures that your audience remains engaged no matter what happens with third-party platforms. Don’t know where to start? Check out my blog post: 14 Book Marketing Tips For Self-Published Authors

Repurpose Existing Content

If you’ve been active on TikTok, there’s no need to let that content go to waste! Repurpose it for other platforms to extend its reach. Even without a future ban, doing so is still a great idea that will help boost your reach and help you discover new readers!

  • Convert TikTok videos into Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
  • Use video snippets or ideas as inspiration for newsletters, blog posts, or even podcast episodes.
  • Adapt TikTok trends to suit the culture of other platforms like Instagram or Pinterest.

Strengthen Community Connections

Prioritize Mental Health

The uncertainty surrounding TikTok can be emotionally draining, especially for writers who rely on the platform. It’s okay to feel upset or even anxious about the change. Prioritize your well-being and encourage others in the community to do the same.

  • Take breaks when needed to recharge.
  • Reach out to fellow writers or friends for support.
  • Remind yourself that challenges often lead to growth and new opportunities.
  • Seek out knowledge and truth when you feel sucked into panic and anxiety.
  • Check your facts. Remember, social media is full of opinions and misinformation.

Be a Source of Inspiration

As a writer, you have the power to lead by example. Share your own strategies for adapting to this shift, whether it’s diversifying your online presence or focusing on audience engagement through newsletters and blogs. Your transparency and willingness to adapt can inspire others to do the same!
